WK FIRE RESCUE
Saturday was a busy one for West Kelowna Fire/Rescue. In the afternoon they were called out to deal with a mobile home fire in the 3500 block of Elk Road. The fire is not considered suspicious. While at the fire, they got a call about a family of four stuck on a steep technical trail on Mount Boucherie. A rope system was set up and the family was lowered to a main-trail near the bottom where firefighters and COSAR members walked them to safety.
The first big wildfire of the season in BC is now 100% contained and under control. BC Wildfire credits hard working firefighters and mother nature for the progress on the Elephant Hill blaze. It started July 6th and was last estimated at 192,000 hectares. Smoke could linger in the perimeter for the next few months.
OJ Simpson was released from a Nevada prison yesterday after serving nine years for a botched hotel room robbery. The prison wasn’t saying where the 70 year old was heading, but many anticipate he will end up in Florida.
Sears Canada has announced it will be closing both its stores at Orchard Park Mall in Kelowna. They are among 11 stores across the country that the retailer announced it was closing down. No dates were released. Sears Canada shuttered 59 smaller stores recently. Court approval will be required before liquidation sales can begin at the full line stores.
Interior Health says it’s investigating information breaches involving the personal information of about 500 current and former employees. The information was found in the possession of two people arrested by Lower Mainland RCMP. External security and privacy experts have been brought in as part of the investigation.
West Kelowna now says the Shannon Lake Road Bridge will reopen to all traffic by 8 am, Thursday, October 12 at the latest. That’s a week and a half ahead of its originally scheduled opening, but it was originally hoped that the bridge might open this past weekend. More time is needed to complete the concrete bridge deck and approach roads.
A 30 year old man remains in custody after a series of violent attacks in Edmonton on Saturday night. A police officer was stabbed several times after a man plowed his car through a barricade outside the Eskimos game. The suspect took off but was later spotted inside a U-Haul truck which plowed into a number of pedestrians as it was being chased. Officials are calling it a terror attack as an Islamic state flag was found in side the vehicle.
Kelowna RCMP are asking for help in finding 49-year-old, Peter Oltean. He left his home on the afternoon of September 19 and family has not been able to reach him since. Oltean suffers from a condition which could impact his situational awareness.

If new NDP environment Minister George Heyman didn’t know about invasive mussels in southern BC before the UBCM last week, he certainly knows about them now. He had presentations from at least four groups including the Okanagan Basin Water Board. The OBWB would like boats inspected before they’re allowed in area lakes, more decontamination options and specially trained dogs to sniff them out.
Checking the weekend scoreboard, the Kelowna Rockets lost 4-3 in a shootout to Everett. The Rockets host Victoria on Wednesday.
The West Kelowna Warriors lost 2-1 in Penticton but shut-out Chilliwack 6-0 at home.
West Kelowna’s next game is Wednesday in Coquitlam.
Vancouver Canucks final preseason game was a 3-2 win over Edmonton. Their first regular-season game isn’t until Saturday when they host the Oilers again.
The Okanagan Sun picked up another win… 24-10 over Langley to push their record to 8 wins and one tie.
Week 15 in the CFL saw Saskatchewan edge Ottawa, Calgary thump Montreal, the Argos beat the Ticats in overtime and Winnipeg dumped Edmonton.
Calgary is in first place in the west with 25 points while Toronto leads the East with 14.
NFL last night in Seattle, the Seahawks had no trouble with the Colts taking a 46-18 win. Seattle with a franchise-record 36 points in the second half.
The Monday night game has Washington in Kansas City at 5:30.
In golf, Canada’s Brooke Henderson won the rain-delayed New Zealand Open, shooting a 3-under 69. It’s her second LPGA Tour win of the season.
And at the Presidents Cup, the U-S beat the International squad 19-11.
