Before yesterday’s Throne speech in Victoria, Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson was elected speaker. He was the only Liberal to put his name forward. The minority government says it plans to commit a Billion dollars to childcare, raise the carbon tax and rework who, and how much, can be donated to political parties. All of this is contingent on it surviving a non-confidence motion from the opposition.

There will be a lot of things to do around the Okanagan for Canada 150 next weekend including the Power Stage at Stuart Park, but fireworks in Kelowna will not be happening. The show has been postponed to the August long weekend because of the lake level. All the events are on the Festivals Kelowna website. Yesterday’s drop in the level of Okanagan Lake of just over two centimetres was the largest yet. But it is still 66cm or about 2 feet above full pool. And for that reason the Emergency Operations Center is once again asking boaters to stay off the lake this weekend as the wake can still cause damage to the unprotected shore or the barricades that have been put up.
The manager of Tween Lakes Resort in Oyama is relieved the evacuation order for there is downgraded to an Alert. However Malcolm Uttley says it`s too early to say what kind of damage has been done by Kal Lake. He says they’ve had a few cancellations, but their long term clients know what’s going on. Is it the beginning of the end for the last two big retailers in Canada. Sears Canada has filed for protection from creditors amid massive losses and a dropping stock price. It will close 59 stores. The Kelowna one is not on the list. There is also word that major shareholders of The Bay are pushing for the company to start closing stores as shoppers turn to online purchases. And who remembers Eaton’s which closed in 1999. It’s assets were bought by Sears. And don’t forget $1.49 Day at Woodwards.
And from the ‘No Way Dude!’ file this morning… a study has found that legalized recreational marijuana use in Colorado, Oregon and Washington means about a 3 percent increase in car accidents.
