There are a number of local events/fundraisers going on in the next while…if you’ve got a few bucks…it would nice to help out…

BBQ FUNDRAISER FOR AIDEN PENNER

Benson Salloum Watts LLP and Boyd’s Autobody are sponsoring to assist Aiden Penner, a kindergarten student at First Lutheran Christian School who has been recently diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Aiden is currently being treated at BC Children’s Hospital for 8 months as part of a 3 year treatment plan.

The barbecue is going to be held at the Benson Salloum Watts LLP parking lot located at 1979 Old Okanagan Highway in Westbank, on Friday, May 29th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The cost is by donation to raise funds for the family during this most difficult time, and who have relocated to Vancouver to be with Aiden.

What a spectacular weekend…a little too much indulging…but so worth the pain the next morning.

Friday we started out around 1 in the afternoon with the Kelowna Jaycees coming in to cook us this incredible spread of trout, ribs, chicken, pulled pork and sausage.  They made this incredible spread of slow and low traditional bbq for a staff party.   INCREDIBLE!!!  Thank you Kelowna Jaycees and we’ll see you at Smoke on the Water Sunday June 21st.  FMI www.kelownabbq.com

From the staff party we went over to check out the newly renovated Creekside Pub.  WOW…what an upgrade!  Tim Allen was on location Friday afternoon and it was a party in there…not a free seat in the house and free appies too!

Then it was off to Kelowna Beer Festival for a large sampling of many many many many beer.  Yummy!  My poor liver!

Saturday the weather was perfect for the 2nd Annual Ride and Rock for Kid’s Care.

Lots of guys and gals took to two wheels for the Poker Run and ended up for a great Memphis Blues dinner at Kreater Custom Motorcycles and live entertainment from Herb Dixon, Ten2Nine and Trooper.

The weather was perfect and everyone was in such a great mood.

Ten2Nine rocked and Trooper rocked harder.  Nice to see so many people up and dancing and having a great outdoor Okanagan party.

Kudos to Jeff and the gang at Kreator for doing such a great job and everyone at Power and Kidscare who worked so hard to raise a few bucks for the kids!  Everyone gets an A+!!!

We’ve got another busy week ahead with the Power 104 Edgecomb Builders Golf Tournament for the BCSPCA on Friday.  Hope to see you there.

So I told you last week our van was broken into at the Greater Vancouver Zoo at the start of the long weekend…and the police and ICBC both think the thieves wanted our stuff for identity theft…because along with our electronics, they took the insurance papers for the van…

So since Thursday, we’ve been dealing with all the fallout from the pieces we lost…and now I want to pass on a few hints I’ve picked up…in hopes of you protecting you, your family and your identity…

First off…never leave a purse or a laptop in a vehicle

I didn’t realize just how much our my business and personal life was in that little white box until it was gone.

14 hundred photos of the family and Power events, the potential of a computer hacker of getting into our every day banking, mortgage and credit cards, all family and friend contacts and probably some more that I haven’t even realized yet.

You often hear computer retailers/repairers and programmers saying back up your stuff.

It’s true…BACK UP YOUR INFORMATION!

I’m fortunate because I had burned some discs of the pictures and videos recently…and the balance are still on the camera…but we still lost pictures of last summer’s vacation.  SUCKS!!!

Create a log in and password to even start the computer

The harder it is to get in to your computer, hopefully…the more likely the thieves just wipe the hard drive and sell it as a fresh computer.

Do NOT save any login and password to anything.

Even the littlest login and password combinations can get you into trouble…like your login and password to the library…SERIOUSLY!

The Langley RCMP record taker told me if a thief uses your library login to get books, cds and videos, doesn’t bring them back and you didn’t report the theft…you’re on the hook for paying back the library for it all.

On paper, write down every card, 1-800 contact and password for every card in your wallet…including passwords for bank machines and on-line banking…and lock that away safely in a safe or safety deposit box.  The faster you can shut down the potential damage to your credit and identity…the better.

Know how to contact the two main credit monitoring companies to put warnings on your files…

www.equifax.ca

1-866-892-2595

www.transunion.ca

1-800-663-9980

That makes it tougher for anyone trying to open new cards in your name to get thru the credit application process…and the warning goes on for 6 years.

Print or write out copies of all the contact information you have for family, friends and business.

It’s a good idea to do that for your cell phone too!

Write down all your login and password information to everything you do online…put it away safely.

Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, i-tunes, myspace…all of them.

Some browsers make it easy to save login and password information and then let you get into an account to do an express purchase.  Just imagine how much debt someone could rack up against you with your i-tunes account.

Change your email login and password…they’ve got your computer.  Every other password you change probably sends a notice to your email…which the thieves then have access too.

When you buy electronics/computers/things that thieves love to steal…keep those receipts and write down the serial numbers.

Most boxes that your goodies come in have the serial number…how often do you keep the box?  Some companies will put the serial number on the receipt…but if they don’t…you don’t have the best possible information to provide to police and your insurance agency.

Start a list of the things that have been taken.  Take a few days.  It’s amazing that days later we are still realizing pieces that have been stolen.

Gather your receipts!  We even kept the receipt from buying our tickets to the zoo and parking because it shows what time we got there and then the police report has what time we called in the theft (it was less that an hour).

Report the theft to police and get a file number…you’ll need it for your insurance claim.

Know your insurance coverage…sometimes items need to be scheduled to get full value back.

I truly hope this never happens to you…but a little preparation before a trip and a lot of caution during a trip can make for a much more pleasant vacation or business trip…and hopefully none of the sadness and violation we’ve been feeling since last Thursday!

So the family and I thought we’d get away for the long weekend and take a quick trip to the coast to visit a friend and hang out.

On the way to White Rock, we stopped at The Greater Vancouver Zoo on 264th and took our 6 year old in to see the animals.

When we came out an hour later, some very professional thieves had broken in to our van and taken a whole bunch of electronic goodies.

Yes, I know…dumb of us to leave them in there in the first place…but first we thought drug addicts looking for something to sell.

Turns out our very smart thieves took everything they could to steal our identities, including the insurance papers for the van.

So now we’re dealing with trying to change passwords for everything, notify everyone that needs notification about the theft and the potential for trouble and trying to remember what was where and what’s gone.

We’ve been in K-town for 6 years now, having come from the coast, where we were hyper vigilante…but I guess the more relaxed atmosphere of the Okanagan crept in and we weren’t cautious enough.

So beware…don’t leave anything in your car that you don’t want to loose.

I hope you had a better weekend!!!
