Kelowna RCMP are now treating the investigation into a body that was found in an orchard off Cooper Road on Wednesday morning as a murder. Police say the woman was between 25 and 35 and do not believe that she was the victim of a random attack. Investigators are working with the Coroners Service to confirm the woman’s identity and the circumstances surrounding her death.
A UBC Okanagan study suggests store-front dispensaries should be part of BC’s model once recreational marijuana use is legalized in Canada next year. Psychology professor Zach Walsh says they got input on the various ways to buy cannabis from over 400 people who use it for therapeutic reasons. He says the only negative about dispensaries was the cost of their products is often higher than from a street dealer.
BC Liquor Stores is holding its annual Bordeaux release tomorrow featuring the 2014 vintage, which many are calling the best since 2010. The release will happen at 13 Signature stores including the one at Orchard Park Mall. The 120 selections will vary in price from 29 to $3,000 a bottle.
It was third time lucky for RCMP as they used a spike belt to stop a suspected impaired driver in Lake Country yesterday. Police say after the driver was initially stopped he took off heading north on the highway, police didn’t chase him but the driver was monitored from an RCMP aircraft. After two unsuccessful spike attempts, the 34-year old Vernon man was stopped at Highway 97 and Oceola Road. During his arrest, police seized an unspecified amount of suspected illicit drugs.

There are now 21 people on the committee the NDP has put together to try and bring universal child care to BC. The committee includes child care professionals and policymakers. There appears to be no time frame for the implementation of universal child care.
The BC Coroners Service says illicit drug overdose deaths, through the first eight months of 2017, already have surpassed the 2016 total for the entire year. There have been 1,013 deaths in the province so far compared to 982 in 2016. In Kelowna there have been 60 illicit drug overdose deaths so far this year versus 47 in all of last year.
Open burning season in the Central Okanagan will begin at 5pm today providing air quality and venting conditions are good. It’s allowed for those property owners who get a permit from their local fire authority. Open burning usually goes from October 1st to April 30th but was postponed this year because of the extremely dry conditions.
Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency across eight counties as 21 large fires have burned across 78,000 hectares in California. In some communities the devastation is total and people, in some cases, had just minutes to get out. The death toll is over 30 and expected to rise as hundreds are reported as missing. At least 3600 buildings have been destroyed.
