West Kelowna fire rescue was working at a house fire Saturday afternoon on Old Raven Road. Because of its location by Old Okanagan and Louie Drive, smoke was visible for quite a ways away. Combination of the fire and winds destroyed the roof. People and pets inside were able to get out okay. Crews also put out a fire in a log in Rose Valley yesterday.
A man from Northwest BC died in a five-car accident on the Connector on Friday night. RCMP say it appears the driver attempted to make a left hand turn across both lanes of travel near Trepanier in an attempt to gain access to an emergency services access road. He was broadsided by a pick-up. Three other vehicles got involved in the crash and a total of eight occupants were treated at the scene by paramedics.
It’s already closed south of Harvey, and starting today Ethel Street will be closed between Leon and Harvey Avenues to complete the installation of a new traffic signal, curb, gutter and catch basins. Most of the work will be done after 7pm to minimize traffic impacts on Harvey. Weather-dependent, the improvements are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

West Kelowna has a reminder not-for-profit community organizations that provide services in the city. They have until the end of the month to apply for Grants in Aid. The City of Kelowna is putting out a call to volunteers interested in providing input for Kelowna’s Community Sport Plan. About 20 people will have an opportunity to participate in a community discussion next Monday from 5 to 830pm. One of BC’s best-known broadcasters and longtime Social Credit politicians has passed away. Rafe Mair, who was heard on the Kelowna airwaves for many years, was 85. He held many cabinet posts in Bill Bennett’s government and was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2005.
The North Okanagan Regional District says Phase 1 Construction of the Rail Trail Project is set to start. The trail will be closed for construction approximately 1 km south of Kickwillie Loop in the District of Coldstream starting today. It will remain closed for the duration of rock scaling, trail construction and development.
It looks like another high-profile Liberal is getting ready to throw his hat into the leadership ring. Former highways and transportation minister Todd Stone from Kamloops is set to make an announcement this morning in Surrey. He will be the 8th candidate running to replace Christy Clark.
Good weekend for local hockey teams. The Kelowna Rockets took both games of a doubleheader in Prince George against the Cougars while the West Kelowna Warriors beat Salmon Arm. West Kelowna take on the Eagles in Surrey tonight.
The Okanagan Sun suffered their first loss of the season against the Westshore Rebels on the weekend. They will now play the V-I Raiders in the semi-final game this Sunday at 1 at the Apple Bowl.
The annual CFL Thanksgiving Monday game in Montreal saw the Eskimos eliminate the Alouettes from playoff contention with a 42-24 win.

The new FedEx Cup season on the PGA Tour kicked off with the Safeway Open in Napa, with Brendan Steele taking the win at 15 under. He was the defending champ. Phil Mickelson was 3 shots back and Graham DeLaet was 4 back.
