Fortis BC will be submitting a plan to the BC Utilities Commission today to build the Ellison Community Solar Pilot Project. The project north of Kelowna, if approved, would be BC’s largest utility-led community solar project to date. It’s a 240-kilowatt solar array composed of 720 panels and anyone who holds a Fortis BC electric account and an advanced meter could rent solar panels on a monthly basis and receive electricity credits for the energy produced.
With construction continuing on the Okanagan Rail Trail, residents are invited to check out the latest plans and learn more about the upcoming work. Construction of 26 kilometres of compacted crushed aggregate trail is expected to be done by next spring. One session will be in Kelowna today from 4-6pm at Parkinson Rec Centre.

The KGH Foundation has announced the Better Together campaign. It’s to raise the $8 million necessary to open JoeAnna’s House, an urgently needed home away from home to keep families together when they need it most. Kelowna’s Huber family committed $1 million to support the construction of JoeAnna’s House in honour of their late parents, Josef and Anna Huber.

The last body known to be trapped in rubble following Mexico’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake has been recovered. Officials raised the overall death toll to 369. The mayor of Mexico City says they do not have anyone missing and all the bodies that have been recovered have been identified.
People who lost their homes on Nighthawk Road in Lake Country in the Okanagan Centre fire are getting a break from the District. Council has agreed to waive fees and most permits for things like road access and water connections. One councillor said the owners have done that before when they first built so there’s no need to stress them again.
Vernon City Councillor Scott Anderson was appointed interim leader of the BC Conservative party at its Annual General Meeting. It’s expected the party will elect a permanent leader sometime next year. In the meantime Anderson says he will put his full efforts into being a city councillor.
The NDP government wants to change the way elections are held in the province. Among the changes, Victoria wants to look again at switching to the proportional representation system where bigger regions, as opposed to ridings, could be represented by two or more MLA’s. The last effort to change the system in a referendum in 2009, only picked up 39% support. The NDP also wants to change the fixed voting date to a Saturday in October instead of the second Tuesday in May.
Kelowna Rockets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period last night, but that was it for the good stuff as they dropped an 8-3 decision to the Victoria Royals.
Meantime in Coquitlam, the West Kelowna Warriors took a 5-4 overtime win from the Express.
The WHL Cup, formerly known as the Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup has announced its rosters for the tournament which begins October 18th in Calgary. Four Kelowna Rockets made the cut. Second round 2017 draft pick Ethan Bowen, will suit up for BC… 3rd round choice Ethan Ernst will play for Saskatchewan…. 4th rounder Cole Carrier for Alberta and 10th round choice Brody Wilson will play for Team Manitoba.
