It’s being called the deadliest shooting in modern U-S history and the main question behind Sunday night’s massacre in Las Vegas still remains, Why? The toll as of last night was 59 dead, including two Canadians, and a Winfield man was among the 527 injured. Police recovered 18 more guns, thousands of rounds of ammunition and explosives at the shooter’s home 130 kilometres away.

Something to keep in mind as the days get shorter and the driving conditions become less reliable. Last winter’s extreme conditions contributed to a 10 percent increase in car crashes with casualties in BC. And it gets worse as driving conditions worsen – between 2012 and 2016, an average of more than 260 casualty crashes occurred in December compared to approximately 130 in October.

BC Wildfire calls it a ‘modified response’, Peachland residents are going to call it ‘that damn smoke’. The 2 hectare fire on Okanagan Mountain will be allowed to burn within a predetermined area to permit fuel reduction. BC Wildfire says it will allow the natural fire cycle to deal with the landscape and make fires easier to manage in the future.
Efforts by the Regional District of Central Okanagan have been recognized by the Union of BC Municipalities. It received an Honourable Mention in the Best Practices, Excellence in Action category for ongoing promotion of responsible dog ownership. Since a review in 2012, the number of dogs registered in the region has doubled from 12 to 24,000.
The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce announced that Lane Merrifield will be named 2017 Business Leader. It’s in conjunction with their Business Excellence Award program. He’s no stranger to the community and is well-known as the founder of Club Penguin; the largest online virtual world for kids, which was acquired by Disney in 2007 for $350 Million. He’ll receive the award October 12th at the Delta Grand at the Business Excellence Awards banquet.
A Somali refugee has been charged with five counts of attempted murder and accused of stabbing a police officer in Edmonton Saturday night. Police say he hit the officer with a car and later plowed a truck into pedestrians on a busy street, injuring four of them. The officer is expected to make a full recovery. He and two others have been released from hospital.
Starting January 1, annual bus passes will be available to people on disability assistance through a new transportation supplement. Those with the Persons with Disabilities designation can use the new supplement for an annual bus pass or for other transportation needs, such as HandyDART. It’s $52 per month and will be on monthly assistance payments, starting with the December 20 one.
They put up a parking lot just before paradise. West Kelowna has constructed a new parking lot just before the entrance to the popular Rose Valley trail system. It’s at the corner of Rosewood Drive and Rosealee Lane and has a trail kiosk and mapping, bear proof garbage can, a bike mechanic station and a bike wash station.
Monday Night Football was in Kansas City saw the Chiefs kick a field goal with 8 seconds left and a touchdown with no time left after a Washington fumble, to beat the Redskins 29-20. Kansas City stays undefeated this season.
Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Chris Carson has a fracture in his left leg just below his knee. He was carted to the locker room late in Sunday’s game with an air cast on his leg.
Meantime, Seahawks left tackle Rees Odhiambo was hospitalized after suffering a cardiac contusion – or a bruised heart – during Sunday night’s game. He was hit in the chest during an interception return in the third quarter.
The Edmonton Eskimos picked up running back C.J. Gable from Hamilton in exchange for two players from the Eskimos’ negotiation list. Gable was named the CFL’s outstanding rookie in 2013 with the Tiger Cats.
The Vegas Golden Knights has announced a “significant donation” in wake of the mass shooting to help relief efforts. The new NHL team also said that their previously scheduled Fan Fest – set to take place today, has been cancelled.
The Kelowna Rockets have traded forward Tomas Soustal to the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for a 4th round pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. Soustal was entering his fourth season with the Rockets.
