The entire island of Puerto Rico and it’s three and a half million residents were without power and running water after yesterday’s direct hit from Hurricane Maria. Winds of 145 miles per hour hit the largest city of San Juan, ripping buildings and homes apart and devastating the landscape. Residents were also told to move to higher ground because of flash flood dangers from the heavy rains.
The frantic search continues for survivors in collapsed buildings including a school around Mexico City. Tuesday’s 7.1 quake has killed more than 220 people including 20 children in the school. A girl was pulled out alive yesterday. It came on the 32nd anniversary of an 8.0 earthquake that killed more than 5,000 people.
West Kelowna Council adopted a Zoning Bylaw amendment to allow an expansion of the Gorman Brothers Mill. The area in question is not developed right now and will allow additional lumber dry storage. Council also passed a Hillside and Industrial Development Permit related to the expansion.
The Provincial Government is offering a $400 cash rebate for replacing an uncertified wood stove with cleaner appliances. Those would include a new pellet stove, an electric heat pump or a gas or propane stove. It’s available through through the Central Okanagan Air Quality program. Toys R Us Canada says its business in this country has done very well in recent years but the problems south of the border are forcing it to seek protection from creditors. Toys R Us in the States has filed for bankruptcy protection as it plans a restructuring. The Canadian operation says all stores will remain open as usual.
The recycling police are going to be watching what you put out at the curb. The Regional District of Central Okanagan has been told inspectors been finding a lot of stuff in the bins that shouldn’t be there… up to 18% in some loads. The most acceptable is 3%. Carts may not be picked up now if there’s unacceptable material in them.
The Information and Privacy Commissioner found the previous Liberal government routinely contravened the timeliness requirements in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Drew McArthur says the government failed to meet legislated timelines at least 20% of the time. And the average number of business days a file was overdue increased from 47 in 2014, to 62 last year.
We told you about the Kelowna Yacht Club fishing derby for blind participants last week. The results are in and the winner with a 19 inch rainbow trout was Daryl Harand. Half an inch behind was Kathy Sannes, who says she has caught a lot of fish before, but this was the biggest.
Friday the 13th of October. That’s when Victoria’s all-party budget committee will be in Kelowna to get input from the public. The location hasn’t been released, but we know the session will run from 8 to noon. If you’d like to be a part of it, registration will open at 9am today. The West Kelowna Warriors kicked off their time at the BC hockey leagues Bauer Showcase in Chilliwack with a 7-2 win over the Coquitlam Express. The Warriors play Cowichan Valley this afternoon at 4.
In NHL pre-season play, the half of the Vancouver Canucks that are not in China played in Calgary last night and came from behind to beat the Flames 5-3.
Team USA hockey coach John Tortorella says if any of his players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game. He has a zero tolerance policy for players who refuse to participate in the anthem during the World Cup.
Thursday Night Football has the LA Rams taking on the 49ers in San Francisco. Game time is 5:30.
Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro says Josh Donaldson is part of the team’s future and it’s “almost a certainty” the 31-year-old won’t be traded during the offseason. Donaldson has hit 19 home runs in the last 2 months.
