West Kelowna RCMP would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the noon hour in the 3600 block of Gates, in Glenrosa yesterday. A number of vehicles on a lot were on fire by the time crews arrived and it had spread to some grass creating smoke that was visible from quite a ways away. The World Wake Surf Championship will be taking place at Hot Sands Beach in City Park from Thursday through Saturday. Competition goes from 8-6 the first two days and 8-4 on Saturday. The beach will be open if you want to go and watch but there will be some display tents and other equipment around.
The NDP government has followed through on its election promise to ban big money donations to political parties. Among the campaign finance reforms, the legislation will end corporate and union donations, ban out-of-province donations and limit individual contributions to $1,200 a year. It’s a 5-year plan to allow political parties to find other ways to raise money.
They don’t mention any prizes but the Central Okanagan school district is asking for suggestions for the name of a new Middle School. Construction will begin this fall in the Upper Mission and it will be for grade six to eight students. They’re taking suggestions until the 29th and we put a link to the page in our news blog on the website.
The 10-day Cops for Kids bike ride through Southeastern BC has wrapped up in Kelowna and it was another success. They’re still totaling up the donations but at last count it was over $300,000. If you’d like to make a donation go to copsforkids.org . All money raised stays in Southeastern BC.
Do you like to support local businesses and merchants wherever possible? An RBC small business survey found 88 per cent of us will do that, while just over half said they would even pay more. A couple of things consumers would like to see from locals are more payment choices and opportunities to engage online and through social media.
Just a reminder that although the Finlay Creek Fire is 100% contained, the area restriction for Crown Land remains in place. That means people are not allowed into areas such as Darke Lake Provincial Park, Garnet Lake and Munro Lake Forest Service Road. While the Kokanee have started to spawn in the rivers around Okanagan Lake, the Adams River Salmon Society is hoping for a good run of pink salmon. It’s expected over 8 million will make it back to the Fraser River from the Pacific. They’re expecting even more next year.
