The Finlay Creek fire was latest estimated at 1,000 hectares thanks to better mapping. However, it remains very active, especially in the southern flank where there is an organized flame front, which is called “rank 3” fire behaviour. BC Wildfire crews continue to fight it and protect properties around the clock as the hot and dry conditions persist. All evacuation orders and alerts remain.
The Grayback Mountain Fire northeast of Little White grew a little bit to 35 hectares over the last 24 hours. On the fire line were 27 ground crews helped by two water tender trucks that managed to get in there. They were just seeing rank one and two behavior on the fire which means it was calmer than the day before. Meantime the Philpott Road fire is now 60% contained.
Your basic ICBC rate will be going up 6.4% the next time you renew. The province has bought what used to be the Howard Johnson’s Motel on Highway 97 North. Renovations will provide additional housing and support for individuals who have been homeless or are at risk of homelessness. It will be operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association which will provide support services and have staff on-site 24/7. It’s expected to be ready early next year. Pic
The federal NDP leadership candidates will be in Vancouver for the last official debate on Sunday. Online voting starts September 18 and results announcements will be held after each round of balloting, every Sunday of October, until a new leader is elected. The first ballot results announcement will happen October 1.

Unlike the weather, home sales in the Okanagan region of Peachland to Revelstoke cooled slightly in August to 882, an 8% drop from July and 14% fewer than a year ago. But the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board says conditions still favour the seller, and will likely continue to do so until inventory grows or demand drops. The average sale price was $489,000… up 5% from a year ago.
As Texas and Louisiana continue to recover from Harvey, the Eastern Caribbean and Florida are bracing for Hurricane Irma. The category 5 storm with winds topping 185 miles per hour is the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic. Irma is expected to hit or sideswipe Puerto Rico today.
In WHL exhibition last night, the Kelowna Rockets went into the third period against Kamloops with a 4-1 lead and skated to a 6-4 win. They will play each other again Friday night at Prospera.
The West Kelowna Warriors have acquired 18 yr old defenseman Garrett Ewert from the Melfort Mustangs as part of a three-way trade with the Penticton Vees. The Vees sent the rights to Ewert and d-man James Miller, to the Mustangs in exchange for forward Dakota Boutin. Melfort then traded Ewert to the Warriors.

The NFL says Sunday’s game between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t be played in Miami due to Hurricane Irma. It could be moved to a neutral site or played later in the season in Miami. The regular season gets underway tomorrow night with Kansas City at New England.
