There are a lot of great quarterbacks in the NFL – and there are a lot of great athletes and personalities, all of whom sell jerseys and put bums in seats – but does Matthew Stafford really belong in either of those groups?
He just signed what is (for now) the most lucrative per-season deal in NFL history. 5 years, $135M. $27M per season, or about $420,000 USD per regular-season quarter. That works out to just over 28-grand per minute. Every minute of the game. Not just the minutes he’s playing.
If you assume the offense is on the field (say) 45% of the time, then his salary balloons to just about $62,000 per minute.
Well, at least his agent deserves to be in the hall of fame.
Not surprising that the top 10 earners are all QB’s, but I was surprised to see one name NOT on this list… Check it out
Matt Stafford – Lions – $27M
Derek Carr – Raiders – $25M
Andrew Luck – Colts – $24.6M
Carson Palmer – Cards – $24.4M
Drew Brees – Saints – $24.3M
Kirk Cousins – Redskins – $23.9M
Joe Flacoo – Ravens – $22.1M
Aaron Rodgers – Packers – $22M
Russell Wilson – Seahawks – $21.9M
Ben Roethlisberger – Steelers – $21.85M
3 of these guys btw – including Stafford – have losing records.
Spot the name that’s missing? Good thing he’s got 5 Super Bowl rings he can pawn if money gets tight…
