Around 100 fire fighters from local departments and BC Wildfire along with skimmers and 4 choppers were working on hot spots and strengthening guards yesterday at the Philpott Road fire in Joe Rich. It continued to burn within its 465 hectare perimeter. Just over half the residents who were evacuated on Thursday were allowed to go home yesterday but they remain on evacuation alert. Regional District and Wildfire officials will decide when it is safe for the others to return. Highway 33 is closed again this morning. Check DriveBC for updates.

Texas continues to get pummeled by rain after Hurricane Harvey came ashore. Houston, one of the largest cities in the US, is being inundated with unprecedented flooding with no end to the downpours in sight which could total more than 125cm. As of last night there had been two reported deaths, but officials expect that number to rise.
Heads up that the aquatic area at Parkinson Recreation Centre including the pools, whirlpool and steam room will be closed for annual maintenance starting today. It’s scheduled to reopen on Sunday, September 17. Also there will be no drop-in basketball or volleyball from Tuesday, September 5, to Sunday the 24th due to gymnasium and change room maintenance.
As work continues on replacement of the Shannon Lake Road Bridge in West Kelowna, the McDougall Creek pedestrian bridge will be closed intermittently this week. The closures will be between 7am and 5pm and are required for safety reasons while demolition occurs on the adjacent sidewalk and surrounding infrastructure. Shannon Lake Road at the bridge is expected to remain closed until October.
DRUG OVERDOSE AWARENESS
International Drug Overdose Awareness Day is this Thursday and the Kelowna chapter of Mom’s Stop The Harm is marking it with two events. The first is at Evangel Church on Gordon Drive from 930-1 and will focus on education and awareness with speakers and info on community service providers. In the evening from 8-10 at The Sails downtown there will be a candle light vigil with music and an open mic.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a small fire at the Cove Resort in West Kelowna on Saturday. By the time firefighters arrived resort staff had managed to put the stove top fire out. West Kelowna Fire Rescue commended the guests and residents of the building for their quick and orderly evacuation.
Central Okanagan RCMP have been rounding up more than 30 people in connection with an undercover drug sting operation. Undercover operators from neighbouring policing jurisdictions recently made over 60 buys. Most of the suspects are considered chronic or prolific offenders who were selling heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine.
The Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in Ottawa went to rookie Sung Hyun Park at 13 under par after shooting 7-under in the final round. Canadian Brooke Henderson finished tied for 12th at 7 under.
In Iowa, the Northern Trust was won by Dustin Johnson who picked up a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat Jordan Spieth. Both players had finished regulation at 13 under par.
The Okanagan Sun beat the Vancouver Island Raiders 46-11 on Saturday to go 5 and 0 for the season. They’re off now until September 10th when the Raiders visit the Okanagan.
The BC Lions found themselves down 31 to 3 after three quarters on Saturday and ended up losing 31 to 24 to Ottawa. BC has the bye this coming week
The scrimmage games and practices continue today at Kelowna Rockets training camp at Prospera Place. The team’s first preseason game is Saturday when they host Victoria.
Meanwhile the West Kelowna Warriors took both preseason games from Merritt on the weekend. Their next game is in Penticton on Wednesday.
105 seconds into round 10 was when the ref stopped the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor in Vegas. Mayweather said McGregor gave him a better fight than expected and added that it was his last fight. He was 50 and 0.
In the MLS the Vancouver Whitecaps edged Orlando 2-1. It moved them into a tie with Houston for 4th in the West and keeps their playoff hopes alive.
