The smoke around 7pm sure caught the attention of westside residents yesterday. A brush fire along Powers Creek near Glencoe and Windt was attacked by West Kelowna fire crews from both sides of the canyon. They were able to get it under control before it moved up the slope toward homes. A call to BC Wildfire for assistance was cancelled.
That didn’t take long. One day after saying we were close to setting the record for the worst wildfire season ever in the province it has been done. About 895,000 hectares have been charred since April 1st. That’s 40,000 more than the record set in 1958 and many of the large fires are still out of control as the heat continues. There are still 28 evacuation orders in the province affecting 6,000 people.
Victoria and Ottawa are working to determine the type of assistance that may be required by British Columbia’s agriculture sector to recover from the impact of wildfires. They’re looking at things such as costs related to ensuring animal health and safety, feed, shelter and transportation costs and what will be needed to re-establish perennial crop and pasture production damaged by fire.
Even the RCMP say they will not ask questions — as long as some stolen items are returned safely. Dwayne Paterson had two laptops and some hard drives stolen from a pickup truck parked outside a Vernon home in the 3900 block of 14th Street August 8th. Here’s your first reminder about the solar eclipse next Monday that we should be able to witness, if it’s clear. About 83 percent of the sun will be covered here as the moon moves between Earth and the Sun. It will start about 9:10 and build to greatest coverage at 10:24, ending at 11:40. There are lots of suggestions online for “safely” viewing the eclipse.
The BC Centre for Disease Control has identified a number of areas to help prevent illegal drug overdoses and reduce the number of deaths. Among them are increased access to education and training opportunities, build on the success of overdose prevention sites and expand and improve addiction treatment. The report didn’t say how much its recommendations would cost or who would pay for it.
Kelowna City Council approved the 2017-18 annual operating agreement between BC Transit and the City. Total transit costs are projected to increase 2.9 percent but fares will not be going up. Council also gave first reading to the proposed zoning bylaw and forwarded the project to an upcoming public hearing for a 50-unit, four-storey multi-family development on Ethel Street between Glenwood and Rose.
The NDP government is appointing 5 new Provincial Court judges, one of them is here in Kelowna. Judge Monica McParland has held positions as federal and provincial Crown counsel. She joined Pushor Mitchell LLP in Kelowna where she was initially an agent for the federal Crown conducting drug prosecutions. Her appointment is effective August 28th.
After a stampede of CEO defections, President Donald Trump ended both of his advisory groups of business leaders. Nine bosses from companies such as Merck, 3M and Campbell Soup ended their alignment with Trump in the wake of his comments about the racist attacks and protests in Charlottesville on the weekend.
One more home game today for the Blue Jays against Tampa before they travel to Chicago to begin a weekend series with the Cubs. Last night against Tampa, the Jays hung on for a 3-2 win. The Blue Jays/Rays game goes at 1 this afternoon
Week 9 in the CFL begins today with Edmonton taking on the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg. The game starts at 5:30. The BC Lions host Calgary tomorrow in a 7:30 start at BC Place.
Edmonton Oilers fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The team has signed centre Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of $8.5 million. It goes through the 2024-25 season.
The PGA Tour stop this weekend is the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro North Carolina. Si Woo Kim is the defending champ.
