The number of fire evacuees in BC has gone from 45-thousand last week — to just over 20-thousand. Emergency Management BC says discussions continue about Williams Lake residents being allowed back in the next few days, but nothing is a certainty yet. As of this morning there are 36 evacuation orders in place, and 40 evacuation alerts.
One of the things on the agenda at the West Kelowna city council meeting today has to do with the BCHL Warriors Hockey team. A staff report recommends giving the hockey team and its new ownership group, control of concessions at Royal LePage Place. The Warriors asked the city to take over last year when it was having financial difficulties and looking at possibly moving to Delta.
Three UBC Okanagan researchers have been awarded the UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarship – the most prestigious award available to graduate students. It will allow doctoral candidates Kimberley Kaseweter, Logan Volkmann and Geoff Coombs to continue their respective research. The scholarshios provide up to $30,000 a year over a two-year term.
Kelowna RCMP is asking for help in finding a man, who investigators believe may possibly be somewhere in the Okanagan Valley. Mohammedine Madani was reported to police as missing a week ago but hasn’t been seen since July 1st when he hinted to his family that he was going to look for work on a farm or Orchard in the valley. He’s 65 years old; non-Caucasian male; 5 ft 11 in; 155 lbs; brown hair and eyes.
The legal fight has been going on for decades but it has ended in a guilty verdict. A judge found that Winston Blackmore a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was married to Jane Blackmore and 24 other women at the same time. Blackmore’s lawyer has said that he would challenge Canada’s polygamy laws if his client was found guilty.
Team BC is ready to take on the best athletes in the country at the 2017 Canada Summer Games which open in Winnipeg on Friday. 354 athletes, along with coaches, managers and technical support staff are heading east. Competition will take place in 16 sports. From around here, there are 8 athletes from Kelowna, 2 from West Kelowna, 1 from Lake Country and 1 from Oyama.
Nothing new that ICBC rates could be going up, but this time an independent report says they could go up 30% over the next two years. Ernst & Young says premiums collected aren’t close to paying claims or overhead. ICBC premiums are already the second highest in the country. Attorney General David Eby, who is also responsible for ICBC says the NDP is committed to fixing the Crown Corporation.
WestJet will have more flights between Kelowna and Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto as it beefs up its winter schedule in November. Edmonton will be increased from 4 to 6 flights daily, three more flights will be added to Calgary bringing the weekly total to 47 and Toronto flights will be increased to 7 per week from five.
Premier John Horgan is on his first trip after being sworn in last week. He’s in Ottawa today where he has a meeting this morning with the Prime Minister and senior government officials about childcare, affordable housing, and public infrastructure. After that he’s off to Washington for meetings with trade officials on the softwood lumber dispute.
In the CFL last night Toronto beat Ottawa 27-24 to wrap-up up week 5.
The BC Lions next game is Friday in Edmonton in what will be a battle for 1st in the west.

Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins signed restricted free-agent defenseman Brian Dumoulin to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $4.1 million.
And the Denver Broncos and general manager/vice president John Elway have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Mile High City through the 2021 season.
