Today is the last day to pay your property taxes in person or online if you’re not on the monthly withdrawl plan. Most city halls are open until 4:30 while the Westbank First Nation office is open until 4. Taxes have to be paid, not postmarked, by the close of business or there is an immediate penalty of up to 10 percent.
The Kelowna woman charged with threatening Premier Christy Clark and local MLA Steve Thomson has another court date July 24th. Pavela Janeckova is alleged to have made the threats in Kelowna during the election campaign although it’s believed Clark was not in town at the time. The nature of the threats have not been released by Crown Counsel.
A Kelowna man had a pretty special Canada Day. He canoed up the Rideau Canal to the celebrations on Parliament Hill. That was a pretty big deal seeing as Wayne Wilson started in Fort St. James last month. Now he didn’t paddle every kilometre of the way but did cover a lot of water in all the provinces on his trip.
Just three months after he was sentenced for his role in a major international cocaine conspiracy, a senior member of the Hells Angels has died. 67 year old David Giles of Kelowna passed away of medical issues on Canada Day in Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Giles’ sentence was the longest ever handed out to a high ranking BC Hells Angel member.
He dove off a bridge to cool off – now he’s presumed dead. RCMP say a 26 year old jumped from a bridge over Beaver Creek near Golden and never surfaced. A Golden Search and Rescue team, using two boats and a dog searched Beaver Creek, Kinbasket Lake, and the shoreline. An underwater dive team is being brought in.
The numbers are staggering when you compare them to 10 years ago, or even last year. To the end of May, there have been 100 deaths due to illegal drugs in the Interior Health Region. In ALL of last year, there were 161. In 2007, there were 35. The majority of the deaths were in Kelowna at 36 so far this year, compared to 48 in 2016.
LAKE COUNTRY FIRES
Sunday evening Lake Country Fire Department responded to what initially appeared to be a brush fire near Oyama, but when they got there, found an office at a gravel pit and a vehicle on fire. Later, they responded to a half acre fire on Carr’s Landing Road at about 3 in the morning. High winds could have turned both into something more serious.
Diabetes Canada is hosting its first ever fundraiser to strike out diabetes stigma in partnership with the Kelowna Falcons baseball team. It will be Thursday night at Elks Stadium when the Falcons host the Victoria HarbourCats. Along with some great outdoor baseball, you’ll get info about diabetes, which affects 1 in 3 of us, and there’ll also be games and prizes. Again that’s Thursday at 630 at Elks Stadium.
Heads up that the roundabout construction at Lakeshore and Collett begins today. Work will take place between 7am and 5pm, but we’re told 2-way traffic will be maintained during construction hours, with some single-lane alternating as needed – pay attention to the flaggers. The 800-thousand dollar project is expected to last until September.
The Canucks were active as free agency opened. They picked up Sam Gagner from Columbus, Alex Burmistrov from Arizona, Michael del Zotto from the Flyers, Patrick Wiercioch from Colorado and goalie Anders Nielson from Buffalo. Nielson will help after Ryan Miller signed with Anaheim.
He could probably buy his home town of Anahim Lake if he wanted. The Montreal Canadiens signed goalie Carey Price, to an 8-year extension for 10-1/2 million bucks a season.
West Kelowna’s Justin Shultz has a new contract with the Penguins. It’s worth 16.5 Million over 3 years. Shultz played 99 games as a teen with the Warriors on the west side.
The Blue Jays spend the 4th of July taking on the Yankees in New York. The game starts at 10. In their weekend series with the Red Sox, Toronto was outscored 29-6.
PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans National was won by Kyle Stanley in a playoff with Charles Howell III.
American Danielle Kang won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Canada’s Brooke Henderson was 1 shot back.
The US Senior Open went to Kenny Perry and his 16-under score.
