The ospreys are back and they’re streaming live. Fortis BC has a camera trained on a nest high up on a pole by Benvoulin Road. They’re getting ready to start a new family and Fortis says the camera will be on until the kids leave the nest. The local Shaw TV cable channel in Kelowna will stay on the air, but larger community channels in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton are going dark. Shaw says the funds will be used for Global News instead. It says duplication of service is why 70 people will lose their jobs.
They’ll be taking a new CT Scanner out of the box today at Kelowna General Hospital. The 1.9 Million dollar piece of equipment will help Emergency room doctors get a faster diagnosis of patients. The area’s four hospital auxiliaries raised the funds for the new scanner.
One man is dead and another is in custody following a shooting in Penticton yesterday. A resident of the apartment building on Creston told Global News that he heard a knock on a neighbour’s door and when the door was opened a shot was fired. RCMP said they recovered a gun when the suspect was arrested and believe it was an isolated incident.
OPEN BURNING ENDS
Outdoor open burning for communities within the regional district comes to an end this weekend. Eligible property owners have until sunset on Sunday to wrap up their burns, as long as they have permits and the weather conditions are favourable. Open burning could resume on October 1st if conditions are good.
One of the perceived front runners for the Conservative party leadership has said bye bye. Financial guy and reality TV dude Kevin O’Leary has called it quits. He cited a lack of support in Quebec. O’Leary doesn’t speak French and had not participated in any of the debates.
RCMP say a missing North Okanagan woman was likely murdered. 27 year old Caitlin Potts of Enderby was last seen February 21st. Police believe she was killed somewhere in the Okanagan, and they’re hoping the public can help find her body as people spend more time outdoors. Potts had connections to Kelowna, West Kelowna, Armstrong, Salmon Arm and Enderby.
Don’t forget about the extra walkers in the Glenmore area today and tomorrow. It’s part of Glenmore Elementary’s Footprint Days. Students and families will be out from 530-630 both evenings promoting walking as a way of active transportation. Motorists should keep an eye out around Brandt’s Creek and Rails with Trails in addition to the streets in Glenmore.
Now he’s NOT going to tear up NAFTA. President Trump has told Prime Minister Trudeau and Mexico’s president that he now believes a renegotiation of the trade deal will make all three countries stronger and better. The news from the White House came just hours after rumours started making the rounds Trump was going to sign an executive order to get the ball rolling to break up NAFTA.
The Kelowna Rockets scored 4 straight goals on the way to a 4-2 win against the Thunderbirds last night at Prospera. The series now tied at 2 games each. Game 5 goes Friday in Seattle.
Next round of the NHL playoffs got underway on 2 fronts last night. In St. Louis, Nashville beat the Blues 4-3. In Anaheim, the Oilers outscored the Ducks 5-3.
Games tonight have the Rangers in Ottawa and Pittsburgh in Washington.
The Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Devante Stephens of the Kelowna Rockets to a three-year, entry-level contract. Stephens is from Surrey and was picked 122nd overall in the 2015 draft.
Former Seattle Seahawks start Marshawn Lynch will be in Oakland Raiders colours in the upcoming season. Seattle traded the running back after he agreed to a 2-year, 16 Million dollar deal.
