Kelowna RCMP had to call in the Explosives Disposal Unit from the Lower Mainland after a suspicious device was found in a car that had been towed to the ICBC claim centre on Springfield. Police technicians were able to secure the device and a more intensive search of the vehicle was negative. Authorities aren’t saying what they found but said ICBC did the right thing to make sure the public was safe.
As we head toward a provincial election in May, Victoria has announced a new investment of $35 million over the next three years in provincial parks. Of that, 25 Million will go directly to hiring new full-time park rangers with a focus on protecting and preserving the back country. The remaining $10 million will be an initial endowment to a new BC Parks Foundation which be spent on promoting and enhancing the experience in provincial parks.
UBC DRUG COSTS
One in 12 Canadians aged 55 and older skipped prescriptions due to cost in 2014 according to a University of British Columbia study. That gave Canada the second-highest rate among comparable countries such as the U-S, Australia and Britain. Unlike other countries with universal health care, public plans in Canada generally only cover select groups, such as social assistance recipients and people over 65.
Three people could face charges after they were found in a stolen truck that had stolen plates on it on Water Street in Kelowna. RCMP say they received a call about a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a business. They grabbed the people inside and subsequently found cans of bear spray, a collapsible baton, suspected cocaine and several flaps of suspected methamphetamine.
Project Literacy Kelowna Society has received a grant from Interior Savings that will allow it to improve the resources available to its more than 400 learners and 125 volunteer tutors this year. The five-thousand dollars will be used to update some of the resource materials used in its core tutoring program. The program matches community volunteer tutors with adult learners who want to improve some area of literacy.
FIRST NATIONS ENERGY
The Province is increasing funding for First Nations clean-energy projects by about 2 million dollars over three years. It’s designed to help remote Aboriginal communities not connected to the Hydro grid to end their reliance on diesel-powered generators. There is a catch though… funding approved for remote communities will be contingent on matching federal dollars.
BC NDP leader John Horgan released his party’s climate action plan that he says will cut carbon pollution, create jobs, and double the number of residents getting rebate cheques. He says says 80 percent of families will get rebates under his plan to offset a higher federal carbon tax. He adds an NDP government will invest the remaining carbon tax revenues into building public transit, and expanding green technology industries.
Handy Dart users in BC seem to be generally pleased with the service they get. BC’s Seniors Advocate released results of a province-wide survey of almost 7,500 users and while 91% are satisfied with the service when they receive it, almost one third said it is not meeting, or only moderately meeting, their transportation needs. Keep in mind the service is not free and the advocate says 53% of users have an income of less than $20,000.
Google, Facebook and Microsoft were the top 3 brands that were influencing Canadians last year. A survey done by Ipsos looked at things like trustworthiness, corporate citizenship and leading edge. The survey of six-thousand Canadians found that technology-driven companies that focus on social media are the ones that tend to drive brand influence.
