I have kept a lot of concert and sports ticket stubs over the years.
Unfortunately I can’t find my U2 ticket. It would have said ‘Cheap Thrill’s and had a price of $3.99. It literally would have been ripped in half so only the ‘U’ might have been on it. The show at The Commodore in March of 1981 has become Vancouver legend. My buddy Mark and I got our tickets the day they went on sale. ‘I Will Follow’ was just getting airplay. (there was a favourite dj of mine named Ellie O’Day on CFOX who had been playing all kinds of new bands like The Police, Dire Straits and U2. All 3 played the Commodore. )
My memory of the show was a short set, probably the whole ‘Boy’ album with ‘I Will Follow’ being played twice. Mark recalls Bono asking if there were any ‘fags’ in the crowd and fans tossing him cigarettes. I remember we were pretty well leaning on the stage and The Edge asking after the final song ‘How do you think we’ll do ?
When Bono asked a Vancouver crowd years later if they saw them at the Commodore thousands and thousands cheered. I know I was there. You too ?
